The Legal Services Consumer Research Program
Gyi TsakalakisCo-founder, AttorneySync
Most law firm marketing is built on assumptions about how people find and choose a lawyer. We’d rather build it on evidence.
That’s why AttorneySync partners with Near Media, a local search and market research firm, to study legal services consumers directly: what they search for, what they click, what they read, and why they choose one firm over another. The findings shape the strategy behind every campaign we run for our clients.
How the research works
The program combines two kinds of research.
Consumer surveys. We survey people who have actually searched for and hired a personal injury lawyer, along with people responding to a realistic accident scenario. We ask how they researched their case, where they looked for a lawyer, how many firms they contacted, and how they expected those firms to respond.
Behavioral research. Real consumers across the U.S. share their screen and audio while they search Google, on desktop and mobile. Each is asked to help a close family member who has been seriously injured in an accident explore their legal options. They “think out loud” as they search and tell us which lawyer or firm they would contact first. Watching these sessions shows us what people actually do, not just what they say they do.
What the research shows, and what we do about it
Google is still where the search starts
Most people still begin with Google. Many are comfortable using AI tools to research their legal questions, but very few use AI to find the lawyer they hire, at least not yet.
What we do: We make sure our clients win on Google first, across organic results, the local pack, and ads, while building visibility in AI Overviews and AI assistants for the research stage of the journey. Law firm SEO · AI search optimization
The local pack wins short, ready-to-hire searches
For short, transactional searches like “car accident lawyer near me,” the map results get prominent placement, and that’s where many people make their choice.
What we do: We treat the Google Business Profile as a primary conversion surface, not a listing to set and forget. Local SEO & Maps
AI Overviews orient searchers, but they aren’t replacing the click
AI Overviews appear on a meaningful share of legal searches. People use them to get their bearings and pick up names of firms to consider, but by and large they still click through to law firm websites to decide.
What we do: We optimize for both: being named in the sources AI draws on, and having a website that earns the click once someone gets there. AI search optimization
Reviews decide who gets considered
In the local pack and Local Services Ads, the firms that get clicked have near-perfect ratings and a large number of reviews. Searchers also read reviews closely, and a weak profile can disqualify a firm before anyone visits its website.
What we do: We build review and reputation systems into client service, so strong reviews come steadily from real, satisfied clients. Referral & reputation marketing
Many decisions happen without a website visit
A large share of choices are made from the search results themselves: business profiles, ads, directories, photos, and videos. For a lot of people, those surfaces are the firm’s first impression and their last one.
What we do: We optimize every place a potential client might decide, not just the website. Legal advertising · Video marketing
Familiarity turns non-brand searches into brand choices
Someone may start with a generic search but choose a firm they already recognize. Last-click attribution hides this, which leads firms to overspend on direct-response ads and underinvest in the brand and reputation that win the choice.
What we do: We measure the whole client journey, not just the last click, and balance direct response with brand building. Read more on how people choose personal injury lawyers
The first firm to respond usually wins
People rarely shop many firms. Most speak with only one or two lawyers, they expect a fast response, and if they don’t get one, many will move on to the next firm.
What we do: We look past the lead to intake: how quickly and how well inquiries are answered, by phone, form, and text, because a lead that isn’t answered quickly is usually a case lost.
Research you can put to work
This research is part of how we work with every client, not a report we hand over and forget. If you want to know what it means for your firm and your market, let’s talk.
